The Miami Marine Council hosted our June Meeting with a packed room of industry leaders focused on the critical issue of the recent proposed revisions to the Manatee Protection Plan. These comments were compiled together along with meeting and collaborations with the Builders’ Association of South Florida (BASF), Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND), MIami River Commission (MRC) and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) and submitted to DERM for their required Deadline of July 5th.
Miami-Dade County recently completed a multi-year effort to update the County’s original 1995 Manatee Protection Plan (MPP) and is the result of recommendations of the Manatee Protection Plan Review Committee, and in coordination between Miami-Dade County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The purpose of revising the original MPP was to provide guidance targeted at the reduction of human-related threats to manatees and manatee habitat based on an evaluation of updated information on manatee use and boat activity in Miami-Dade County.
The Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, Division of Environmental Resources Management (RER-DERM) hosted two public presentations to provide an overview of the proposed updates to Miami-Dade County’s Manatee Protection Plan. They are accepting additional comments until July 5th.
